Los Olivos Tree Lighting

Published December 6, 2012

I know I’ve said that Los Olivos is like going back in time, but their Christmas tree-lighting ceremony is plain and simple proof. So heartwarming and uplifting (literally), everyone should experience this at least once.

Get this. Every year on the Saturday following Thanksgiving, a 5 year old girl dresses up as an angel and carries a magic wand to the tree-lighting. At darkness, the entire community gathers around a flag pole decorated as a Christmas tree to the smells of roasting chestnuts and the sounds of live music on street corners.  They all watch as the angel’s father holds her up to the tree and she touches the tree with her wand, magically lighting the tree for the first time of the season.
